According to the Brain Injury Association, each year 2.8 million people sustain a workplace-related brain injury from: 

  • 48% falls 
  • 17% being struck by or against something
  • 13% motor vehicle accidents  

The Brain Injury Association, the nation's oldest and largest brain injury advocacy organization, recognizes Brain Injury Awareness Month every March. Brain injuries are the leading cause of death and disability, affecting one in 60 people in the US. There are two types of brain injuries Acquired Brain Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury.

  • ABI - not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma.  
  • TBI - defined as an alteration in brain function or other evidence in brain pathology, caused by external force trauma.  

The Brain Injury Association recognizes that this condition is often misunderstood, misdiagnosed and an underfunded neurological disease. The organization has focused heavily on educating the public by bringing awareness to these types of conditions through their campaign #MoreThanMyBrainInjury. What are the signs of a brain injury? 

There are 4 common signs that someone has experienced a brain injury:  

  • Irritability 
  • Aggression 
  • Posturing 
  • Amnesia 

3 ways to prevent brain injuries in the workplace: 

  1. Be aware of surroundings-Workers should be aware of their surroundings and mindful of any objects that may be overhead and cause potential injuries. 
  1. Follows safety rules-Each organization creates safety guidelines and workers should be made aware of these rules and follow them properly to avoid injury. 
  2. Use protective gear-Safety gear, such as helmets, are required for any area that has a risk of head injuries.
