How To Create Chemical Labels

Video Transcription

This video will describe how to create a GHS-aligned aligned chemical information label using the LabelForge PRO software. These labels are based on the international GHS standard, and can be used to meet national implementations of that system, such as OSHA's HazCom 2012 rules.

On Kodiak, click the Chemical Labeling button on the home screen to get started. To choose which system you will use for your chemical labels, select the appropriate country or authority in the module selector here. You can also choose the language for your label in the same menu.

This module keeps an internal database of chemical information, already populated with hundreds of common industrial chemicals. You can search for a specific entry using the search function at the top of the screen, and use the arrow buttons to browse your search results.

Start a new chemical entry in the database, click the New Label button, and the editing menu will slide out automatically. If you need to adjust the information in an entry, just find the entry you want to change and click the Edit Record button.

Here, you can start with the basic details, like the chemical name and the EC, UN, and CAS registry numbers.

Then choose a signal word. Warning, danger, or none. If you have any supplemental information to include on the label, enter it here.

For the hazard symbols or pictograms, click on each symbol that should appear on the label. Selected symbols will be highlighted in orange. Click them again to deselect them

To select the needed hazard statements, click this button.

You'll be able to browse the complete list on the left of this window, and add selected statements to your entry on the right.

You can also search the statements using this search field. Click OK when you finish selecting statement.

The precautionary statements are selected in the same way. You'll be able to browse the complete list on the left of this window, and add selected statements to your entry on the right. You can also search the statements using this search field.

You can also edit the text of precautionary statements that you've added, by clicking on them and typing. And you can create completely new precautionary statements with the Create Statement button. Click OK when you finish selecting statements.

Finally, select the chemicals supplier from the dropdown menu. Click the pencil button to add new suppliers to the list, edit an existing supplier entry, or remove an unwanted entry. When you finished entering these details, save them into the program's internal database with the Save Database button here.

To choose the dimensions and other formatting choices for your label, open the Label Settings menu here. You can choose a label template, sorted by size, as well as the font for your text.

Once you've made all of your selections, you can save the label design for further customization with the Save Label button, or start printing right now.
